For paint or coatings: record the reference and validate the finish with a sample.
Pantone colour chart
For a graphics reference: specify the Pantone system and substrate.
Compare shades
Start with the final medium. Then select a few shades, view them side by side and compare their lightness, saturation and contrast. Keep the full code with the system name when sharing your choice.
A HEX code, RAL reference and Pantone reference are not interchangeable ways of specifying the same physical colour.
